SEAS welcomes the news that National Grid has been awarded these monies to explore the benefits of superconducting cables and offshore islands/ platforms.

Offshore grid technology advances are being taken up by North Sea countries who have been pioneering their own platforms and islands for the last five years.

Better late than never, Britain can make a transition to more efficient offshore solutions, using superconducting cables which will be ready for use by 2033. These cables can carry 10GW electricity instead of the standard 2GW to brownfield sites closer to demand.

ScottishPower could be invited by NESO and NGET to use this new technology for SPR EA2 and EA1 taking its wind power directly to brownfield sites closer to demand, avoiding the needless damage to countryside around Aldeburgh, Friston, Saxmundham area.
